Maret Tsarnaeva, who lives in Toronto, Canada, told reporters that her nephews, Boston bombing suspects Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, must have been set up.

Addressing cameras from outside her home, Tsarnaeva said her nephews were hard workers. She said Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was shot and killed by police overnight, was a devout Muslim who was married to a Christian woman in the U.S. The couple have a 3-year-old child, she said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, remains on the run.

Tsarnaeva insisted her nephews could not be involved in the Boston Marathon bombings that claimed three lives on Monday and injured nearly 170 other people.

“My nephews cannot be part of this terrible, horrible act that was committed in the streets of Boston,” she said. “I know these two nephews — smart boys, good boys — they have no motive for that. They have no ideas to be going to this kind of act. It’s just not the case, it cannot be true.”

Earlier Friday, an uncle of the suspects, who lives in Montgomery Village, Md., publicly pleaded with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to turn himself in to police. He said the actions of his nephews had brought shame upon their family and the Chechen ethnicity.
