TIMELINE: Manhunt for Boston bombing suspects ends in custody

Thursday

5 p.m. FBI release photos of the two men suspected of planting bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line.

10 p.m. Police respond to report of a robbery at a 7-Eleven in Kendall Square, near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (Note: Massachusetts State Police said Friday afternoon that the suspects were not believed to be responsible for the robbery.)

10:30 p.m. Gunshots reported near Building 32 on the MIT campus.

10:30 p.m. Brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev approach MIT campus police officer Sean Collier and fatally shoot him in the head. The suspects steal the officer’s car.

Shortly after: Police receive reports of an armed carjacking of a Mercedes SUV in Cambridge.

The victim was reportedly carjacked at gunpoint by the brothers and was kept in the car with the suspects for about half an hour. The victim was let go at a gas station in Cambridge.

Police then began the manhunt in Watertown. Explosives were thrown out of the Mercedes SUV, and police exchange gunfire with the brothers.

An MBTA transit officer was wounded in the shootout and was taken to the hospital.

Tamerlan, the brother wearing the black cap and sunglasses in the photos released by the FBI, ran toward police officers, then fell to the ground. He reportedly had an explosive device strapped to his chest. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.

Friday

2:30 a.m. The younger brother, Dzhokhar, Suspect #2, drove the stolen SUV through a line of police officers and threw explosives out of the car window during a car chase from Cambridge to Watertown.

4:20 a.m. Police officers asked everyone in Watertown to stay inside and not open any doors.

5:30 a.m. MBTA service suspended.

8 a.m. Surrounding neighborhoods – Boston, Cambridge, Waltham, Newton, Bemont, Allsion/Brighton – put on lockdown.

9:30 a.m. No-fly zone order issued for entire Boston area.

10:20 a.m. NECN reported that the vehicle police were looking for was found in Boston.

10:28 a.m. UMass Dartmouth closed after suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev identified as student.

10:50 a.m. Search for bombing suspect focused on 20-block area in Watertown; officials fear he may be wearing explosive vest.

10:53 a.m. CNN reported police are asking for a Russian interpreter.

11:30 a.m. Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio: The person in Watertown is not the suspect.

12:30 p.m. Mayor Thomas Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick spoke during a press conference and asked everyone to remain indoors. They said police are going door-to-door through Watertown.

12: 38 p.m. Col. Timothy Alben of the Massachusettes State Police said there will be a controlled explosion on Norfolk Street in Cambridge. The blast was to keep law enforcement officials safe as they proceeded.

1:50 p.m. ABC reported five police officers are being treated at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital after injuries in overnight chase.

3:20 p.m. Both the father and the aunt of the suspects claim the brothers were framed. 

3:37 p.m. Homemade explosives found on the scene in Watertown, reports CNN.

4:04 p.m. Authorities have confirmed that the suspects did ont rob a 7-Eleven in Cambridge. They have reviewed photos of the robber and it is not the bombing suspects.

6:02 p.m. Mass. State Police say they recovered evidence from Thursday night’s Watertown shootout scenes, including evidence of homemade explosives, pipe bombs, another pressure cooker and more than 200 spent rounds.

7:10 p.m. Ten minutes after the press conference with the Boston police on the status of today’s manhunt, reports of “rapid” gunfire was reported from Watertown.
A reporter for Channel 5 says that “hundreds” of police, as well as SWAT teams, have been deployed to a backyard on 67 Franklin St., in Watertown where a body was found in a boat. Eye witnesses report that they heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.
It is not known if the body in the boat is Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, one of two brothers allegedly responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings and if the body is alive or dead or even wired with explosives. The other suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, is dead.

7:35 p.m. CNN is reporting that FBI believes Boston suspect is still alive on a boat.

8:09 p.m. It is believed the suspect is alive and moving an arm, according to the police scanner.

8:32 p.m. NBC News is reporting a negotiator is on the scene in Watertown.

8:34 p.m. The Boston Globe is reporting three people have been taken in to custody in New Bedford in connection with the marathon bombings.

8:50 p.m. Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev is alive and in custody.

8:59 p.m. People are lining the streets to applaud and congratulate law enforcement officials.
