Nearly half of New Jersey’s registered voters approve of an ethics probe into U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez’s ties to a Miami political donor under investigation by the FBI.

A Quinnipiac University poll released this morning had 48 percent of registered voters approving of the Menendez investigation, while 32 percent feel the ethics probe is politically motivated.

In January, reports surfaced that Menendez had sex with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic on trips funded by Miami eye doctor Salomon Melgen. The Democratic senator in early January reimbursed Melgen for the flights and has vehemently denied he had sex with prostitutes on the trips.

Melgen, his family and his business have donated nearly $1 million to Democrats in recent years. He was hit with an $11 million tax lien by the Internal Revenue Service in 2011, and saw his offices raided by FBI agents earlier this year.

From April 19-22, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,112 registered voters by phone for the poll.

Despite supporting the ethics probe by an overwhelming margin, 44 percent of New Jersey voters approve of the job Menendez is doing in Washington, according to the poll, compared to just 32 percent who disapprove. Meanwhile, 39 percent of those polled said Menendez is honest and trustworthy.
