Brits take offense with Ikea garden gnome ad
You can now add Ikea to the list.
Brits are taking offense with a recent Ikea television ad which shows angry garden gnomes attacking a couple that’s renovating their garden.
Complaints soon rolled in calling the ad unsuitable for children, scary and violent.
The commercial is a play on the “in with the new, out with the old” saying. The gnomes represent an outdated outdoor space and Ikea is there to provide new, modern furniture.
“Make more of your garden,” the commercial says. “Say no to gnomes.”
Regulators decided to address the issue on the Advertising Standards Authority website.
“We thought it was clearly fanciful and light-hearted,” they wrote on the site. “We also didn’t share the view that it would encourage or condone violence of anti-social behavior and was unlikely to upset children.”
Ikea, standing its ground that this is simply a funny ad, released a statement saying “We can confirm no gnomes were harmed in the making of the advert, thanks to the brave stunt doubles and some clever post production.”
