Doink the Clown, former WWE wrestler, dead at 55
Doink the Clown is dead.
The former WWE wrestler, whose real name is Matt Osborne, died Friday at the home of his girlfriend. He was 55.
The gossip website TMZ reported the death as accidental.
Osbourne portrayed the demented clown gimmick for the World Wrestling Federation before it changed its name between 1992 and 1993.
“A rugged brawler in promotions like Mid-South Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling, Osborne made a major impact in WWE under the greasepaint of a prankster named Doink — one of the most enduring personas of the early ’90s,” WWE said in a statement. “WWE is saddened by the news of Osborne’s passing. Our deepest condolences go out to Osborne’s family, friends and fans.”
While other wrestlers assumed the character after Osbourne left the company, he is considered the original Doink. He returned to the gimmick in a 2007 anniversary show for WWE legends reunion.
