Theft victim bypasses cops, calls teen suspect’s mom

Eliza Webb had the unfortunate luck of having her car broken into. While surveilling what items were taken, the West Seattle woman discovered the thief had accidentally left his smart phone behind.

Webb scrolled through the contacts and made what we assume was the most awkward phone call ever.

Webb called the alleged thief’s mother to tell her what happened.

“This is a very uncomfortable phone call to make,” Webb said about calling the suspect’s mom. “I have your son’s phone and I’m missing some things out of my car and I think they might be two related items.”

According to Webb, the 19-year-old suspect’s mother was “devastated.”

Webb drove to the teen’s house to pick up her items, and she told KOMO News that he answered the door with a look of defeat on his face.

“He looked like he had been crying,” she said.

It turns out the 19-year-old suspect had been drinking with a friend and the two stole from 10 unlocked cars in the neighborhood. They blamed their actions on “boredom.”

Webb decided not to notify the police, but instead had the young man track down the other victims.

“I think bringing the police and courts into something like this can have long-term, devastating consequences for kids,” Webb told The Seattles Times. “I wanted to meet him, talk to his parents and see if there might be another way. I felt that if I could get him to own up to what he’d done and understand there were consequences, it could be a much better outcome.”
