A 29-year-old preschool teacher who lost her leg in the Boston Marathon bombings was the honorary starter for the Baltimore Marathon yesterday, just days after receiving her first prosthetic.

Erika Brannock, of Townson, Md., was near the Boylston Street finish line waiting for her mother to complete the April 15 race when double blasts injured her, along with hundreds others, and took the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy.

Doctors amputated Brannock’s left leg above the knee. In June, she was the last bombing patient to leave a Boston hospital. Last week, for the first time, she started using a prosthesis.

“I got emotional even before I got up there,” Brannock told Fox News. “I was choking on my words. It came from my heart. That was one of the coolest things I’ve done so far. “Getting out and being active is the most important thing. It helps keep a smile on my face.”

Brannock told the news oulet that she plans on returning to Boston for the 2014 marathon: “Honestly, the safest place I can be is there. They’ve learned so much from that day,” Brannock said. “I don’t ever want to be afraid to go back there.”
