Sen. Ted Cruz held secret meeting at Mexican restaurant
Sen. Ted Cruz met with 15 to 20 of his colleagues Monday night in a secret meeting in the basement of Tortilla Coast in Washington, D.C., at the restaurant’s Capitol Hill location, reports Roll Call. Sources told the blog the party included Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Steve King of Iowa, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Raúl R. Labrador of Idaho, Justin Amash of Michigan, Marlin Stutzman of Indiana, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Tim Huelskamp of Kansas. A source told Roll Call that “the group appeared to be talking strategy about how they should respond to a tentative Senate deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling without addressing Obamacare in a substantive way.”
Unfortunately for Cruz, it wasn’t a great spot to hold a secret meeting since many House members eat and get drinks there: In fact, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, was there with some other representatives and spotted the group. Cruz has become a household name after instigating the government shutdown. He may have been a smelly roommate in college. No word on what the politicians ate: Tortilla Coast would not provide comment. If we had to guess, though, we would go for the Big House Burrito with steak – Cruz seems like he’d want red meat – and maybe a strawberry margarita or the stars and stripes cocktail.
