Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina accidentally revealed that she and 15 other female Democratic senators sent Hillary Clinton a letter urging her to run for president in 2016. “All of the Senate Democratic women have written her a letter encouraging her to run,” Hagan told a crowd of over 200 women at a panel discussion in New York City on Monday, reports Capital New York.

But the letter was supposed to be a secret. Sources told ABC News that Hagan’s office has since sent apologies to the other women who penned the letter.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., spearheaded the show of support and rounded up signatures from all of the female Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren. Though Boxer would not comment on the letter, she told ABC News, “I have repeatedly said – publicly, privately and in writing – that Hillary Clinton should run for president in 2016. I can only speak for myself. I’ll leave it to my colleagues to describe their views.”

The actual letter is still under wraps, unseen by members of the general public. But its existence implies that the other senators would forgo plans of running themselves if Clinton throws in her hat.
