(UPDATE) Yale confirms armed person near campus, orders shelter in place
Yale University is urging people on campus to shelter in place after a confirmed report of a gunman on or near campus.
A university alert, updated at 12:54 p.m., said there is no change in campus status and that a shelter in place order was still in effect.
The university posted an alert on its Twitter account about 11 a.m. that said there was a confirmed report of a person with a gun.
“Confirmed report of a person w/ gun on/near Old Campus. SHELTER IN PLACE,” the tweet said.
Yale, New Haven and Connecticut state police were on the scene and were investigating.
An alert was also posted on the school’s website. It said that about 10 a.m., New Haven police received an anonymous call from a phone booth reporting a person on campus with a gun. At that time there was no confirmation.
Yale University is located in New Haven, Conn., and has more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Most of the students should be away from campus, however, as the university recessed for the November holiday last week, according to the academic calendar.
