Top 5 controversial tweets of 2013

Some crazy stuff went down on Twitter in 2013, guys. Most of these were deleted, but we’ve resurrected them in all their glory. Here’s a look back at some of the most controversial moments of the year in 140 characters or less.

Remember these?

1. The Onion called 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis the c-word.

Yes, The Onion is a satirical news organization, but this one pushed a few buttons, prompting the CEO to eventually apology to Wallis.

2. SpaghettiOs tweeted its cartoon mascot holding an American flag to commemorate Pearl Harbor.

The backlash was quick and fierce. It didn’t take long for the canned pasta giant to issue an apology, also via Twitter.

3. Dr. Phil asked his Twitter followers whether or not it is OK to have sex with a drunk girl.

He quickly deleted that one, but the hashtag #DrPhilQuestions was already trending with outraged responses.

 

4. National Security staffer Jofi Joseph was behind controversial Twitter account @NatSecWonk.

So.. he got fired. We guess that’s to be expected when you openly criticize your bosses and the administration you work for.

And in other White House tweets….

White House staffer Dan Pfeiffer tweeted the n-word.

It seemed like an unfortunate typo, but it definitely caught Twitter’s attention for a minute.

5. Comedian Jenny Johnson taunted Chris Brown — and he took the bait
