It’s shaping up to be a big week for birthdays. First Kate Moss, now Michelle Obama. The FLOTUS is one of the most glamorous 50-year-olds in the media, thanks to her perfect coif, glitzy earrings, Marchesa gowns, Pilotto prints, Balenciaga shifts — the list goes on and on.

Not one to shy away from color, she manages to make conservative looks covetable. So in light of the first lady turning the big 5-0, we’re looking back on the best style lessons we’ve learnt from her so far, J.Crew cardis and all.

Style lesson 1: A beaming smile is really the only accessory you need.

Style lesson 2: For eveningwear, choose a color that suits your skin tone and own it. (Dapper gentleman accessory optional.)

Style lesson 3: Score inspiration from your peers, then work the look in your own personal way.

Style lesson 4: For those extra important occasions, shut it down in a show-stopping color.

Style lesson 5: Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice a statement look.

Style lesson 6: Let one piece do all the work; don’t overdo your outfit.

Style lesson 7: Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd.

Style lesson 8: Play up your assets. (Because arms that toned are too good to hide.)

Style lesson 9: Taking sartorial inspiration from your tea towel is SUCH a good idea.

Style lesson 10: Off-duty days shouldn’t be off-style days. Pearls + sweater = the most glamorous low-key look there ever was.
