VIDEO: Boy with no arms, 10, plays trumpet at school

Jahmir Wallace, 10, might not have arms, but he doesn’t let that stop him from pursuing his dreams. Wallace wanted to play the trumpet since he was in third grade, and he made his wish a reality when he debuted at his school’s winter concert in Phillipsburg, N.J., reports WFMZ.

The bold fifth grader said he wanted to try something different. “My older sister used to play the piano,” said Wallace. “So I thought maybe I should try an instrument. I thought maybe I could try and figure out new things.”

Wallace was born with no arms, so he uses his feet and toes for everything instead. His teachers set up a special stand for his trumpet so he can reach the finger buttons with his toes alongside his classmates.

Wallace told WFMZ that he thinks the trumpet suits him. “I kind of felt excited,” said Wallace of his first time playing the instrument. “I kind of felt like, oh man this is kind of comfortable and it kind of felt like this might be the one for me.” Wallace started playing four months ago.

His music teacher Desiree Kratzer has been extremely supportive of his effort. “Everybody who knew him said if Jahmir wants to play the trumpet, we want him to play the trumpet,” said Kratzer.

In no way does Wallace toot his own horn – figuratively, at least. He gave his teacher plenty of credit and said, “If it wasn’t for her I would never know what the trumpet was.”

Wallace encouraged other children to pick up instruments as well. “You never know, if you like it, you like it, if you don’t, you don’t,” he said sweetly. “Keep on trying.”
