‘Dumb Starbucks’ opens in Los Angeles

It’s not just another dumb Starbucks. It’s the original “Dumb Starbucks.”

A coffee shop called “Dumb Starbucks” opened in the Los Feliz neighborhood in Los Angeles on Friday. The store looks exactly like a regular Starbucks except that everything has the word “dumb” in front of it. A medium cup of joe? That would be a Dumb Grande. A Mocha Frappuccino? That’s a Dumb Mocha Frappuccino to you, and to everybody else who patronizes the store.

KPCC reports that coffee has been free at “Dumb Starbucks” since it opened on Friday as part of a grand opening promotion. Lines were out the door with people trying to get free coffee and figure out what exactly a “Dumb Starbucks” is.

It’s unclear who owns the “Dumb Starbucks” and if it will stay open and function as a real store. KPCC reports that the store had no business license or health code rating posted on its walls, and the baristas told reporters they were hired through Craigslist. Some suggest it’s a prank or an art project.

The store posted a Frequently Asked Questions flyer, stating that it’s classified as a work of parody art in order to avoid legal complications. “In the eyes of the law, our ‘coffee shop’ is actually an art gallery and the ‘coffee’ you’re buying is considered the art,” it said on the flyer. Maybe the answer is just as simple as that.
