A Texas woman is being hailed a hero after she bit off a dog’s ear to save her daughter during an attack.

Chelsi Camp was dog sitting a friend’s pit bull on March 31 when the attack occurred. The dog seemed friendly at first, but he quickly turned after he got closer to Camp’s 2-year-old daughter, Mackenzie Plass.

“The dog came up and he was just curious,” Camp told Houston’s KHOU News in an interview this week. “When he smelled her, that’s when you saw it flip because I think he smelled my dog on her.”

The pit bull began attacking the little girl, and Camp instinctively came to her daughter’s rescue. She shoved her hand in dog’s mouth and even bit his ear off.

“You do whatever you can,” Camp said. “I don’t have physical strength at my side.”

Camp managed to call 911 while fighting the dog. An officer responding to the scene shot the dog, but didn’t kill it. He was later euthanized.

“I only know to fight so how else do you get somebody to stop,” Camp said. “I mean I would do the same thing with a human being.”

Mackenzie is recovering well after suffering injuries to her face and head, her mom said. She has scars on her face and must stay out of direct sunlight for a year, but she is getting her stitches removed this week.

“She’s a strong little girl and a fighter,” Camp said. “She’s meant to be here.”

The toddler has been in good spirits, she added. “She’s doing great. You wouldn’t know it if you couldn’t see.”

Camp has full use of her arms and hands again, and she is back at work.

“I can actually hold her again,” she said. “I couldn’t hold her for the first week that was the hardest part.”
