Letter: Melissa McCarthy should flaunt her size
Re: ‘Outcry over Melissa McCarthy Elle cover’ (Metro, Oct. 18-20)
Initially I was miffed at Elle for covering up Melissa’s body in a voluminous coat. If I hadn’t already read that she was on the cover, I wouldn’t have recognized her.
Then I recalled a previous interview where Melissa admitted to wanting to “magically” be smaller and that she didn’t know why she’s at her current size despite daily tennis lessons and Pilates and eating healthy foods. Also, she said nothing when size-acceptance activists were unhappy with her being the only of the “Bridesmaids” in sleeves while her co-stars were sleeveless.
As much as I’d love to believe that she’s a proud and confident fat woman, Melissa is apparently not happy with her body. It seems like she’s more resigned to her size rather than embracing it.
I hope she learns to truly love the image in the mirror. Not only is she immensely talented, she’s also gorgeous.
