Letter: Nyong’o has her facts wrong
Re: ‘Lupita Nyong’o: Get on the good foot’ (Metro, Oct. 28)
Shouldn’t research for the role in a movie on American slavery, as a matter of course, include the history of America itself? Lupita Nyong’o’s assertion that “America is made of immigrants. The African-American slaves came from Africa, the white slave owners were Irish and German and English” isn’t completely accurate.
In fact, African-Americans’ position in America is absolutely unique: We are the only people here who DIDN’T immigrate.
Also many of us didn’t arrive as slaves, but that’s another subject. And for the actress to make a point of announcing that she is “middle class” was just, well, anything but.
