PHOTOS: Broad Street Run takes over Philadelphia

From near and far they came, with one mission: to run.

For 40,000 runners, the 2015 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run was an opportunity to test their mettle down Broad Street from Somerville Avenue near Central High School in Logan to the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.

It is billed as “the largest 10-miler in the country” and was named one of the fastest 10-milers in the US by Runner’s World Magazine.

Runners were greeted by cheering supporters and live music as they ran the race.

The winner of the race was Haile Mengesha, 29, of New York, New York with a time of 47:53.

The female winner of the race was Tigist Jabore of Silver Spring, Maryland, with a time of 53:34.

The male record-holder for fastest time is Patrick Cheruiyot, who got 45:14 in 2007.

Catherine Ndereba hold’s the women’s record for fastest time with 53:07, which she got in 1999.

All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
