Eagles playing musical chairs at quarterback

Mike Vick sat on the sideline yesterday with a knit cap on.

The scene seems likely to repeat itself Sunday night, when the Eagles play the Giants. Vick didn’t practice yesterday, but head coach Andy Reid hasn’t officially ruled the quarterback out.

“We’ll just see how the week goes,” Reid said. “If Michael has an opportunity to play then Michael will play, and then we go from there.”

Reid added that Vick’s broken ribs were still sore and preached patience as his body continues to heal.
“We’re not going to put him in any bit of risk out there, that’s not what we do,” Reid said.

With Vick out, Vince Young and Mike Kafka split the first-team reps. Young has been listed as the backup quarterback all season, but hasn’t looked sharp when asked to fill-in. Still, he has the experience having gone 30-17 in his NFL career as a starter.

“I’m getting better each week, every day, really,” Young said. “I always stay ready and prepare like I’m going to be the starter, even when Vick is healthy.”

If Reid opts for Kafka, he’ll be ready as well.

“The approach you take for every practice, every game, every opportunity you have to run the offense is showcasing yourself and your abilities,” Kafka said.

Meanwhile, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin isn’t quite convinced that No. 7 won’t be out there leading the Eagles out of the tunnel at the new Meadowlands.

“I am not going to believe that Michael Vick won’t play until I see him not jog out there,” Coughlin said.

Hall gets promoted to roster

Welcome, Chad Hall.

The Eagles promoted the 5-foot-8 powder keg to the team’s 53-man roster yesterday and released safety Jarrad Page.

Hall, who started the season on the practice squad, appeared in eight games last season and caught 11 balls for 115 yards, including a touchdown. The versatile Hall was used in a variety of gadget plays, especially in goal-line packages. He also has experience on kickoff and punt returns.

“Whatever they ask me I was ready last year and I’m even more ready this year,” Hall said yesterday.
