Barkley, Schmidt making headlines on slow Philly sports day

Happy Wednesday. Suddenly, out of nowhere, it has turned into a big day in Philadelphia sports.

And not because of the Flyers-Penguins bloodbath (don’t worry, that is still going down Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in front of a live, national audience). No, two former heroes are making news.

First, Charles Barkley celebrated his 50th birthday Wednesday (it’s also coincidentally Rihanna’s birthday). Comcast SportsNet is airing a tribute —”Barkley at 50″ (Wednesday, CSN, 7 p.m.) —to the Round Mound. The Sixers honored him a few weeks ago when he when was in town to call a Sixers game — and Comcast got the inside access.

“On Noah’s Ark, two of everything. Well, I’ve got news for you — that partner [Barkley] fell off the edge of the boat. There’s one of him. One,” his former coach Jim Lynam told CSNPhilly.com contributor Gordie Jones.

Watch the special. Enjoy the show. Save a giraffe.

Meanwhile, Phillies legend Mike Schmidt sent the Twitter-sphere into combustion Wednesday morning when he showed up in Clearwater sans mustache. One longtime Phils fan immediately wrote, “APOCALYPSE IMMINENT.”

Schmdit was at Phils camp for his annual visit, where he serves as a roving hitting instructor. He usually drops a few gems on the media, like this one in 2012.

“A guy like me is only good if there are ears that want to listen,” he said. “I never said I’m the end-all when it comes to that, but I’m a sounding board for guys, and I enjoy it.”

So who’s not listening … Ryan Howard? Chase Utley? Dom Brown? Keep an ear open for more great Schmidt sound bytes.
