Celtics: Long, strange 2012-13 regular season coming to a close

It's been a tiresome journey for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett this season.
It’s been a tiresome journey for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett this season.

It’s truly hard to believe that the Rajon Rondo-Kris Humphries shove match occurred during the 2012-13 NBA season. Ya know, the same season that’s still going on right now.

The Celtics’ 82-game regular season schedule began a night before Halloween and ends a week from Wednesday. In between, there was the thought that the C’s actually had too many quality bench players and the thought that Jeff Green was a giant bust. There was, of course, the Rondo season-ending injury on Jan. 27, followed by the Jared Sullinger season-ending injury a few days later. Kevin Garnett missed a chunk of games. Paul Pierce missed a few along the way.

The point is, the Celtics team that takes the floor Wednesday night against Humphries and Brooklyn (8 p.m., CSN), has nearly zero in common with the one that lost to the Nets a few nights after Thanksgiving.

Garnett and Pierce were back in the starting lineup in Sunday’s win over the Wizards, but were flanked by Green, Brandon Bass and Avery Bradley. In the loss to the Nets on Nov. 28, Jason Terry and Rondo started, Jeff Green scored two points, Jason Collins played 11 minutes and Leandro Barbosa played 13 minutes.
