Eagles Notebook: Donovan McNabb to retire in Week 3

Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb will retire as an Eagle in Week 3.

Donovan McNabb claims he’s set to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle in 2013.

McNabb, the greatest quarterback in franchise history, broke the news Tuesday on his show on NBC Sports Radio. He said the Eagles reached out to him about coming back on Sept. 19 when the team hosts Kansas City. It will be an old school reunion, since Andy Reid — McNabb’s former coach and friend — now coaches the Chiefs.

The Eagles wouldn’t confirm or deny McNabb’s claim. The quarterback said he harbors no ill will toward the city that made him famous despite what some considered a messy ending.

“I have nothing but love for the Philly fans, even the ones who were highly criticizing me or opinionated in any way,” McNabb told ESPN 97.7 FM. “I can’t get upset at them because my job is to get out on the field and be productive. That’s what quarterbacking is all about.”

McNabb was reportedly holding out hope that he could return to the NFL. He was released by the Vikings in 2011 and went unsigned.
Birds add Jones

The Eagles added free agent running back Felix Jones, as was rumored last week.

Jones, a first-round selection (22nd overall) by the Cowboys in 2008, signed a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday. The Eagles released second-year receiver Marvin McNutt to make room.
