Red Sox drop second straight to Phillies, 4-3

As the four-game series shifted to Philadelphia for the final two games, the Phillies won their second straight with a 4-3 win Wednesday night over the Red Sox. The Red Sox have now lost three of their last four road games.

Red Sox starter John Lackey went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. The three runs all came on solo shots, including back-to-back homers from Domonic Brown and Erik Kratz in the fourth inning. Koji Uehara also allowed a solo home run in the eighth, giving the Phillies an insurance run, extending their lead to two runs going into the ninth.

The Phillies needed that extra run as the Red Sox rallied to score a run off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game. Jacoby Ellsbury paced the offense with two hits and an RBI while Daniel Nava hit a solo home run in the sixth.

The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow night (7:05, NESN) where Franklin Morales will make his season debut for the Red Sox and go up against Jonathan Pettibone.

What they’ll be saying: Once again, as has been the case with many of the Red Sox losses was their inability to get a clutch hit when they needed it. The team left the tying run at third base in the ninth inning and finished the game going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position … Aside from the three home runs, Lackey pitched fairly well continuing his stretch of solid outings. It was really just three poor pitches that did him in … The Red Sox will need to put these two losses behind them with the final game of the series tomorrow night before a big weekend series in the Bronx against the Yankees.
