Buchholz wins ninth, leads Red Sox over Angels 7-2
After dropping the first game of a day-night doubleheader and having a depleted bullpen the Red Sox needed a solid outing from starter Clay Buchholz and that’s just what he delivered in the Sox’ 7-2 win over the Angels Saturday night. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Red Sox against the Angels.
Buchholz went 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. He threw 104 pitches, but was forced to leave the game with stiffness in his neck. The win was his ninth of the year, tying for the league lead. Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to close out the win.
The Red Sox scored early and often against Angels starter C.J. Wilson, scoring two in the first and another in the second before adding one in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Every member of the lineup had a hit in their 13-hit attack. David Ortiz led the offense with two hits including a home run and three RBIs. Jonny Gomes and Dustin Pedroia each had two hits in the win as well.
The teams will wrap up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon (1:35, NESN) where Ryan Dempster will take to the mound for the Sox and be opposed by Joe Blanton.
What they’ll be saying: Despite the win there were some injury concerns. Buchholz left the game with tightness in his neck and this is a week after missing a start due to discomfort in his collarbone. Following the game he said the two weren’t related and it wasn’t a concern, but obviously it is something to monitor. Other than the injury he pitched quite well, proving he is one of the best in the entire American League. Shane Victorino made his return to the lineup since being put on the disabled list and missing 17 games with a hamstring injury. He appeared to re-injure it rounding third base in the first inning and while after the game he admittance it happened, he added it didn’t bother him the rest of the game. He will likely be out of the lineup Sunday and with all his injuries this season any time he gets banged up it’s something to watch.
