Playing the Field: Kate Upton owns summer one NSFW, topless photo at a time

It’s officially summer on the sports calendar with the NBA in its offseason, the Stanley Cup Final wrapped up and the U.S. Open in the rearview mirror.

In other words, there will be less talk about actual sports on Twitter and the like over these next two months and more talk about athlete summer flings. Leave it to the No. 1 sports WAG in the world, Kate Upton, to time a hurricane of tabloid-worthy news more perfectly than this concocted Serena Williams-Maria Sharapova feud. (C’mon, just DAYS before Wimbledon, the signature event on the tennis calendar? Did David Stern take a new job or something?)

Upton has now made headlines three times in five days, just in time to dominate the normally slow summer sports news cycle. First, she tweaked her former athlete boyfriend Justin Verlander by tweeting to one of his best friends: “Happy birthday to one of my favorite people ever @FrankViola3 !!!!,” preceded by an e-card that read, “Happy birthday to a friend of a friend who I now like more than the original friend.” On a side note, just how awesome would it be if Frank Viola III landed Upton? I know that violates about a dozen guy codes but if your name is Frank Viola, the son of a pitcher, who has got to be the son of a plumber, you have already earned the right to boff any and every iconic Sports Illustrated swimsuit model.

Second, and most important, Upton nearly smashed the Internet to bits when a topless image of her surfaced. For the very NSFW photo, click here. No word yet on if IT is real but THEY appear to be real (whomever that is) in that photo.

Third, Upton spent a night getting “very cozy,” according to E! News, with LA Clippers forward Blake Griffin at some place called Beauty & Essex in New York. Upton is in the city to make her film debut in “The Other Woman,” where she will be seen wearing Daisy Dukes alongside Cameron Diaz (see above). Fun for all.
