Luck isn’t a word that has been used in conjunction with the Mets much in the last four-and-a-half years. But it was the word manager Terry Collins used when discussing the selections of David Wright and Matt Harvey to the NL All-Star team.

“I am very, very happy, and we are very, very lucky we have those guys on our team,” Collins said of the franchise cornerstones last week.
This will be Wright’s seventh All-Star appearance and Harvey’s first.

“They have had tremendous first halves,” Collins said. “I thought Matt would pitch [well, but] I didn’t realize he would pitch this good. From what I saw last year in the second half, I thought, ‘Wow the sky’s the limit here,’ but [for him] to come as fast as he has come to where he is at right now is pretty impressive.”

While the All-Star Game is old hat for Wright, it is new ground for Harvey. Twenty-nine starts into his major-league career, the righthander has become the unquestioned ace of the staff.

Harvey has a 7-2 record in 19 first-half starts, with a 2.35 ERA. His 147 strikeouts lead the National League.

“It hasn’t quite hit home yet,” Harvey told reporters, “but it’s definitely a huge honor, and I couldn’t be more excited that it’s New York.”
