Jets camp to remain in Cortland once current contract expires

Having spent three of the past four preseasons in Cortland, N.Y., the Jets could be returning to upstate New York after their contract with SUNY Cortland expires this year.

Metro New York has learned that the Jets and SUNY Cortland have “agreed in principle” to extend their relationship beyond this year. Ironically, it remains to be seen if head coach Rex Ryan, the man who originally brought the Jets up to Cortland, receives a similar extension from team management and new general manager John Idzik.

Despite being in the final year of their original three-year contract with the Jets (the Jets did not travel to Cortland in 2011 due to the labor negotiation impasse), the organization could be coming back to its SUNY Cortland base for the next two years.

A source close to the situation said that the “partnership agreement [between SUNY Cortland and the Jets] is a revocable permit, which means that either party may choose to opt out under certain conditions, during any year of the agreement.” This means that if the Jets had decided last year that SUNY Cortland did not provide service or facilities that suited their needs for 2013, they could have pulled out as long as they met certain contractual conditions.

The current agreement with SUNY Cortland was for three years and allows for a two-year renewal, followed by two one-year renewal options. Per the source, the Jets and the SUNY Cortland have agreed in principal with the two-year renewal to extend the deal to 2015.
