Phillies drop fourth straight

Having lost their three prior games, the Phillies’ sloppy play Wednesday night — exactly one week from Major League Baseball’s trade deadline — may have convinced general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. that it may be prudent to be a seller, not a buyer, this year.

The Cardinals drubbed the hapless Phillies, 11-3, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Among the lowlights were a stolen base surrendered to Cardinals starting pitcher Jake Westbrook — not exactly the fleetest of foot — in the fourth innning when first baseman Darrin Ruf failed to hold him on, and an awful defensive play by John Mayberry Jr. in center field in the fifth on a bases-loaded triple by Shane Robinson.

Mayberry came in fast, then dove, but he came up about four feet short of actually catching the ball, which bounced past him.

Mayberry did go 2-for-4 at the plate, but it was way too little to help the Phillies.

Westbrook pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. He is now 7-4 on the season.

John Lannan (2-4) took the loss for the Phillies, allowing four runs on eight hits in just four innings. The Phillies’ bullpen didn’t fare much better over the next four innings.

The Phillies are now three games below .500., at 49-52, having come out of the All-Star break with a 1-4 start to the second half. They wrap up their three-game series with the Cardinals (61-37) tonight before heading to Detroit to take on the AL Central-leading Tigers over the weekend.
