Famed Red Sox slugger George “Boomer” Scott died Monday of natural causes in his hometown of Greenville, Miss. Scott was 69.

The first baseman was a part of two of the more memorable teams (albeit for different reasons) in Red Sox history, the 1967 “Impossible Dream” team that won the American League and the 1978 club that blew a 14 game lead during the season to the Yankees.

Nicknamed “Boomer,” Scott was a three time All-Star and an eight-time Gold Glove winner at first. Scott played 988 games at first base for Boston, a franchise record.

“In losing George Scott, we have lost one of the most talented, colorful, and popular players in our history,” said Dick Bresciani, the Red Sox’ Vice President/Emeritus and Team Historian, in a statement released by the club. “He had great power and agility, with a large personality and a large physical stature. He could light up a clubhouse with his smile, his laugh, and his humor—and he was the best defensive first baseman I have ever seen. We will miss him, and we send our condolences to his family.”

Scott also played with the Brewers for five seasons in between his Boston stints and ended his career playing for the Royals and Yankees.
