Drew delivers clutch ninth inning homer to power Red Sox over Astros

Before the ninth inning in Wednesday night’s game with the Astros, the Red Sox were a combined 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and looking for the elusive clutch hit to put them over the top. It finally came with one out in the ninth on a three-run home run from Stephen Drew, which gave them a 7-5 win to complete their second come-from-behind win in as many nights. They now have 27 come-from-behind wins this season.

The Red Sox had a 2-0 lead before the Astros scored twice in the third to tie the game and then three more times in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead and force Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster from the game. Dempster went six innings allowing the five runs on seven hits while striking out seven. The Sox cut the deficit to one, 5-4, in the seventh inning on a two-run homer off the bat of Jonny Gomes, which then led to Drew’s clutch hit in the ninth.

David Ortiz went 4-for-5 to lead the offense, while Drew and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each had two hits apiece in the win. Junichi Tazawa (win) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and Koji Uehara came on for the ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.

Boston will now travel to Kansas City for a four-game set with the Royals beginning Thursday night (8:10, NESN) where Jon Lester will take to the mound and be opposed by Bruce Chen.

What they’ll be saying: There isn’t much else to say about the Red Sox and their ability to come back in games as they truly have the never quit attitude and it seems to be someone new each night coming through in the clutch. Wednesday night it was Drew who is now hitting .360 in the ninth inning and extra innings this season … The Sox were two outs away from dropping two-of-three to the last place Astros, but after one swing of the bat they took two-of-three in two very impressive comeback wins. Their upcoming series with the Royals will be more difficult than maybe they had planned as Kansas City has the best record in all of baseball since the All-Star break.
