Phillies doomed by wild pitching in loss to Nats

Phillies pitchers allowed 22 baserunners, including nine on walks and one on a hit by pitch, in a 9-6 loss to the Washington Nationals Tuesday night.

Rookie right-hander Ethan Martin surrendered five walks over his 4 2/3 innings of work. He allowed five runs on just four hits, including a three-run bomb by Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos in the second inning.

The Ramos home run came after Martin hit Jayson Werth with a pitch and walked Adam LaRoche two hitters later.

Martin is now 2-4 on the season.

Rookie third baseman Cody Asche went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run for the Phillies (63-76). He’s raised his average to .266 after a slow start.

Gio Gonzalez picked up the win for the Nationals (70-68). He’s now 9-6 on the year after a less-than-spectacular performance, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on five hits.

The Nationals are now seven games behind Cincinnati for the NL’s second wild card spot.

Tuesday’s game was the first at Citizens Bank Park with attendance below 30,000 since 2008.
