Will Middlebrooks powers Red Sox over Rockies in interleague finale

The Red Sox finished interleague play with a 14-6 record, the second-best mark in all of baseball, following Wednesday’s 15-5 rout of the Rockies in Colorado. The teams split their brief two-game series.

Jacoby Ellsbury made his return to the lineup going 2-for-2 with a walk before being lifted after his third at-bat, which was the plan getting him acclimated to game action. Will Middlebrooks (7 RBI) led the offense with two home runs, one being a grand slam in the eighth inning. David Ortiz also homered in the win. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Shane Victorino powered the offense with four and three hits respectively in the 16-hit attack.

Red Sox starter Jake Peavy struggled out of the gates, but got things together going six innings allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out five to pick up his 12th win of the season. The bullpen got it done as Junichi Tazawa, Franklin Morales, Craig Breslow, and Ryan Dempster pitched three scoreless innings of relief.

The team will be off Thursday before the regular season series finale in Baltimore this weekend.

What they’ll be saying: It was good to see Middlebrooks get the bat going as he entered the game in a bit of a slump going 5 for his last 39. He is at his best when he’s driving the ball to right center, which he did Wednesday night and is a good sign as the postseason approaches as he will play a major role in the middle of the Sox lineup … It wasn’t the best postseason tuneup for Peavy, but he was able to battle and ended up by giving the Red Sox six strong innings. He likely will be the Game 4 starter in the ALDS.
