Yankees announce re-signing of manager Joe Girardi

Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said Tuesday he wanted to get his manager locked up quickly. Apparently, he meant less than 24 hours.

The team announced Wednesday afternoon they had re-signed Joe Girardi to a four-year extension. He will now be under contract through the 2017 season.

Financial terms were not released but according to reports, including CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, the deal is worth $16 million plus bonuses. He was paid $3 million per year on his previous deal.

Girardi, 48, joined the Yankees in 2008 when Joe Torre retired from the position. He missed the playoffs the first season, but won the team’s 27th World Series in 2009.

He finished up a disappointing 2013 with the Yankees missing the playoffs for the second time under his leadership.

But Girardi was being courted at least openly by the Cubs, if not others. Girardi is a Peoria, Ill. native and was drafted by the Cubs, making the spot an ideal location.

However, he chose to stay with the club where he won a title as both a player and manager.

The team must now move to rebuild the roster in the offseason, starting with second baseman Robinson Cano, who is also a free agent. He’s reportedly asked for a 10-year deal, which the Yankees and Steinbrenner have said they will not be committing to.
