Roberto Hernandez signs with Phillies

Out of the Phillies’ rotation is a righty who routinely factored into the American League Cy Young race in the latter half of the last decade. In to the Phils’ rotation for 2014 is a righty who was once thought to be a yearly Cy Young candidate in the junior circuit.

Roy Halladay is now retired, but it’s Roberto Hernandez who will now look to fill a starting void left behind on the Philadelphia mound. Hernandez finished fourth in the AL Cy Young race back in 2007 (Halladay finished fifth that year) but the Dominican hurler could never regain the magic of that season and his career has been a mixed bag since.


Hernandez, who was named Fausto Carmona earlier in his career, was arrested by Dominican police in January 2012 for falsifying his identity. He was accused of being three years older than he was listed with the Indians at the time. He is currently listed as being 33-years-old.

Hernandez spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, going 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 151.0 innings pitched. He was demoted to the bullpen down the stretch of the Rays’ season.
Hernandez has a 4.67 career ERA.
