St. Joseph’s draws tough matchup with UConn

The Hawks enter tournament play in an opposite position than their crosstown rivals in Villanova.

St. Joseph’s has played their way into the tournament with an A-10 championship, and is playing some of the best basketball of the year, right now.

They will face No. 7 Connecticut as the No 10 seed in the East in a 6:55 tip in Buffalo Thursday.

“I don’t have any doubt about my team and being set for this stage,” St. Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli told CSN. “I might gently let them know this is a Philadelphia doubleheader, and we haven’t been a part of one of those.”

If the Hawks and Wildcats each win, a third “Holy War” match up would take place Saturday.

If it happens, it would be the second time the two squads ever met in the NCAA Tournament. The only other instance was in 1971.

The Huskies boast one of the best backcourts in the nation, with Shabazz Napier, the AAC player of the year and Ryan Boatright commanding the offense for UConn.

But the Hawks have the A-10 Tournament’s most outstanding player in Halil Kanacevic, who will match up with the equally sized, 6-foot-9 Huskies forward DeAndre Daniels in the post.
