The Phillies were shut out Tuesday night for the third time in just 21 games so far this season.

Pittsburgh starter Jeff Locke allowed just two hits over six innings as the Pirates defeated the Phils, 2-0, at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies (9-12) mustered just two hits over the final three innings against the Pittsburgh (11-9) bullpen.

The Phillies’ fourth inning played out in an all-too-familiar fashion for fans of the Fightins. They failed to score even a single run after starting the frame with runners on first and third and no outs.

John Mayberry led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, followed by a Domonic Brown walk. Mayberry was nailed at home trying to score on a a Ben Revere chopper to third. Erik Kratz then hit into an inning-ending double play.

One positive to take from the game for the Phillies is starting pitcher Cole Hamels gave most of the bullpen a much-needed night off.

Hamels pitched well enough to earn his first win of the season, were it not for yet another disappearing act by the Phillies’ lineup. He gave up just two runs on seven hits over eight innings.

Hamels is now 0-3 on the young season.
