Red Sox fall to Rangers for second straight night

The Red Sox bats were silenced for a second straight night in Texas as Boston fell to the Rangers, 5-1, Saturday night. The Sox finished with seven hits, this coming off a series which saw them score 20 runs in three games in Toronto.

John Lackey got the nod for Boston, making just his third start of the season. The right-hander went five innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four. With it being his third start of the year he was pulled after throwing 98 pitches. He allowed a lead off home run to Ian Kinsler in the first and then allowed two more runs in the fourth.

Andrew Miller and Junichi Tazawa each pitched scoreless inning of relief before Koji Uehara allowed two runs in the eighth.

Despite the loss, David Ortiz did extend his hitting streak with a double in the second. The streak now sits at 24 games dating back to last season. Daniel Nava drove in Ortiz for the lone Sox run.

The teams will close out their weekend series Sunday  (3:05, NESN) with a great pitching matchup as Jon Lester will be opposed by Yu Darvish.

What they’ll be saying: Considering it was just his third start of the season Lackey really didn’t pitch all that bad. Coming into the game in Texas he had a lifetime record of 7-6 with a 6.68 ERA, but held the Rangers to just three runs over five innings — not shabby for the supposed No. 5 starter … There is a cause for concern with the Red Sox bats as they’ve struggled this series particularly with runners in scoring position as they went 1-for-9 in the game. Things won’t get any easier for them as they go against Darvish tomorrow to try and avoid a sweep.
