Red Sox comeback to defeat Indians 7-4

BOSTON — After trailing 3-1, and 4-3 the Red Sox finally came all the way back to defeat the Indians 7-4 Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom half of the eighth inning and the tying run on second base with two outs, pinch-hitter Mike Carp tied the game with a wall-ball double, scoring Pedro Ciriaco who doubled earlier in the inning. Dustin Pedroia, the next hitter, followed suit with another wall-ball double scoring Carp for the game-winner.

Daniel Nava added a two-RBI single on a play in which the Indians misplayed a popup to shallow left field to account for the sixth and seventh runs later in the inning. It was the third time the Red Sox have won a game in which they trailed after seven innings this season.

“We started to chip away, obviously with Pedey [Pedroia] with the 0-2 double which was seemingly the big blow and then we caught a break with the wind blowing, a base hit for two runs off of Nava’s bat,” said manager John Farrell. “Once again Mike Carp steps up in a key spot and gets a first pitch fastball for a double the other way. Just a very good come-from-behind team win today.”

Starter Jon Lester went seven innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out eight, while throwing 124 pitches. The hits, strikeouts and pitches were all season-high’s. Three of the four runs he allowed came with two outs. Junichi Tazawa pitched the eighth inning to earn the win, while Andrew Bailey earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

The Red Sox scored their first run in the second on an RBI single from Ciriaco, another in the fourth and eventually tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Jonny Gomes. No. 8 and 9 hitters Jose Iglesias and Ciriaco led the offense going a combined 6-for-8, scoring four runs. Pedroia had a solid afternoon as well going 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon (1:35, NESN) where Felix Doubront will take to the mound for the Sox and be opposed by Corey Kluber.

What they’ll be saying: As the case with the team of late they have gotten their hits in bunches, as they had four in the four-run eighth inning, including three doubles. Farrell has been very good of late with his in-game decisions, deciding to pinch-hit Carp for Gomes in the eighth, but not in the sixth as both moves paid off … Lester didn’t have his best stuff early on, but seemed to get it going from the fourth inning on. Five of his eight strikeouts came after the fourth inning. Although he took a no-decision the Red Sox are 8-3 in games he starts.
