Red Sox offensive erupts in win over Tigers despite Lester’s struggles

After struggling offensively of late, averaging just three runs per game in their last 11 games, the Red Sox took a step in busting out of their slump by scoring ten runs in their 10-6 win over the Tigers Friday night in Detroit.

The Red Sox blew the game open in the fourth inning when they scored four runs and chased Tigers starter Doug Fister from the game. It gave the Sox enough of a cushion to be in control of the game all night long, despite a shaky outing from Jon Lester. Shane Victorino had a monster night going 4-for-5 with five RBIs. Stephen Drew and Jose Iglesias each had three hits in the No. 8 and 9 spots, part of the 17-hit attack.

Lester went 5 2/3 innings allowing five runs on nine hits, including two home runs in the fifth inning. He struck out three and walked three as well, throwing 102 pitches. Once again Lester didn’t pitch like the ace is is supposed to be, struggling with his consistency, but still picked up his seventh win of the season. Junichi Tazawa and Craig Breslow combined to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings, before Andrew Miller allowed a run in the ninth.

The teams will be back at it tomorrow night (7:15, FOX) as Allen Webster will make his third spot start of the season and will be opposed by Max Scherzer.

What they’ll be saying: The Sox have been waiting for a game offensively like this for over a week now. It bailed out another disappointing outing from Lester. The left-hander hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning in any of his previous three starts. In his last 40 innings he’s allowed 33 earned runs and nine home runs. Aside from allowing runs, the more concerning thing has been his inability to go deep into games and provide relief to the bullpen, which is something aces of staff’s are depended on to do. Lester will need to be better for the Sox to continue to have the success they’ve had early on in the year.
