Matt Harvey dealing with blister, could miss next start

Matt Harvey’s next start — and maybe his hopes of an All-Star Game start — could be in jeopardy.

The Mets said Tuesday their young ace is dealing with a blister on his right index finger over his last three starts.

Manager Terry Collins said Harvey may be skipped in his scheduled start on Saturday at Pittsburgh. However, Collins said that was more about preparing Harvey for a possible start in next Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Manager Bruce Bochy has yet to name a starter for the game.

The odd claim comes despite Collins admitting the blister has likely caused Harvey’s recent location issues. He did not throw a bullpen session between his start on July 3 against Arizona and Monday night’s start in San Francisco due to the blister, which Harvey admitted bothered him on certain pitches.

Harvey had his worst start of the season against Arizona, allowing five earned runs and 12 baserunners in just six innings. The performance raised his ERA from 2.00 to 2.27. He struggled again Monday, allowing three runs over seven innings. His 121 pitches through seven innings was tied for the most he’s thrown all season. He threw 50 pitches in the first two innings alone and allowed a two-run homer to Buster Posey in the first inning.

Harvey, for his part, did not blame his recent struggles on the blister.

“It kind of started not the last start, but the start before,” Harvey told reporters after Monday’s start. “It’s no excuse for my poor pitching. And I feel fine with it. I just have to figure some things out and get back out there.”

The Mets beat the Giants, 4-3, in the 16th inning Monday night.
