The return of Derek Jeter lasted just one game after all.

The Yankees announced Friday morning they have placed Jeter on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 12, with a Grade 1 right quad strain. He will be eligible to return on Saturday, July 27, when the team hosts Tampa Bay.

Jeter injured the right leg running out a ball in the fourth at-bat of his return from a more than three-month stint on the DL to begin the season.

He was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI against the Royals in the return game.

The Yankees, and Jeter himself, had hoped to avoid another stay on the DL. Jeter said after the game on July 12 that he was not concerned and hoped to be ready for Friday night’s second-half debut against the Red Sox. Instead, his return will be a false start.

The team signed and purchased the contract of Brent Lillibridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Lillibridge had been traded to the Yankees by the Cubs on June 21. He was never promoted from Triple-A, however, where he batted .341 with seven home runs in 23 games.

The Yankees will announce a corresponding move from the 40-man roster later on Friday.

It was no secret the Yankees rushed Jeter back. General manager Brian Cashman admitted as much, saying the team might as well have Jeter play at the major-league level instead of rehabbing when Travis Hafner and Brett Gardner both suffered minor injuries last week.

Jeter was playing in his first game since fracturing his ankle in the ALCS against Detroit last season. He suffered a setback with a second fracture during spring training, delaying his return until July.
