Report: Yankees in pursuit of Alfonso Soriano

The Yankees are badly in need of offense and appear to be in pursuit of an old friend for help in that area.

A host of media reports indicate the Yankees are trying to negotiate a trade with the Cubs for outfielder Alfonso Soriano.

Soriano began his career with the Yankees and developed into a fan favorite before being traded to Texas for Alex Rodriguez in February 2004. Soriano was with the Yankees from 1999 to 2003, emerging as a starter in 2001. It was Soriano’s home run in the eighth inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series that appeared to be a game winner before Mariano Rivera blew the save in the ninth on a Luis Gonzalez blooper to center.

Soriano’s post-Yankees career never reached the heights he had in the Bronx.

He hit 46 home runs and batted .277 in 2006 for Washington, parlaying that into an eight-year, $136 million deal with the Cubs. He hit 33 homers and batted .299 in his first year in Chicago, but after being an All Star in his first two seasons with the Cubs he hasn’t been back since 2008.

Soriano has averaged 24 homers, 76 RBIs and a .253 batting average per season in the past five seasons. He is batting .256 with a .286 on-base percentage, but he does have 17 home runs and 51 RBIs in 2013.

The issue in negotiating a trade will likely be the money involved. Soriano is being paid $18 million this season and $18 million next season before he becomes a free agent. The Yankees are trying to get their payroll under the luxury tax threshold of $189 million next season, so they have to balance how much money they will give to the Cubs for Soriano.
