Papelbon blows save, wastes Hamels’ strong effort

Cole Hamels did everything in his power to get his fifth win of the season.

He even drove home the only run through eight innings of the Phillies’ game against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park Thursday night.

Jonathan Papelbon would see to it that would change in the top of the ninth, sending many fans home from the South Philadelphia ballpark saying, “I definitely didn’t come here for this.”

Papelbon surrendered two runs in the ninth on four hits and two walks. He was heavily booed as he left the mound after finally getting through an inning of work, many fans surely recalling his “I definitely didn’t come here for this,” throw-the-team-under-the-bus line just before the Phillies dropped their eighth-straight game over the weekend.

It was Papelbon’s sixth blown save in his last 13 opportunities, so the $13 million per year right-hander surely has had a lot to do with the Phillies’ struggles.

Roger Kieschnick singled home the game-tying run for the Giants (48-59). Joaquin Arias followed with the game-winning single.

The Phillies (50-58) are 2-10 since the All-Star break.

Hamels pitched eight strong innings, allowing seven hits and walking one while striking out five. His single in the fifth produced the Phillies’ only run.
