Phillies fall to Cubs on rookie’s late home run
It was Donnie Murphy’s night.
The Chicago Cubs beat the Phillies on the rookie’s home run in the ninth inning Wednesday night.
Murphy’s three-run blast off relief pitcher Justin De Fratus sealed the deal for the Cubs, who took the game by a score of 5-2.
It was Murphy’s third home run in two games against the Phillies this week. The infielder, who played third base Wednesday night, made his big league debut for the Cubs (50-63) on Sunday.
Murphy also hit a home run in the third inning off starting pitcher Cole Hamels. He was 3-for-3 on the night with 4 RBIs.
Domonic Brown, who returned from the DL Tuesday night, hit his 25th home run of the season for the Phillies last night. It was a solo home run.
The Phillies scored their other run on a RBI single by Chase Utley in the seventh inning. Utley reportedly signed a two-year contact extension worth $27 million before Wednesday’s game.
The Phillies (51-62) could not muster any offense in the ninth off Cubs closer Kevin Gregg, who picked up his 23rd save of the season, after Murphy stroked the game-winning shot into the left field seats at Citizens Bank Park.
