Andy Pettitte to announce retirement Friday

Andy Pettitte will be joining long-time teammate Mariano Rivera in retirement at the end of the season, according to the team.

Pettitte, 41, will be retiring for the second time. He left the game after the 2010 season, sat out 2011 and returned for the 2012-13 seasons.

“I’ve reached the point where I know that I’ve left everything I have out there on that field,” Pettitte said. “The time is right. I’ve exhausted myself, mentally and physically, and that’s exactly how I want to leave this game.”

He will finish his career as a Yankee, the same team which drafted him in 1990 and where he won five World Series titles (1996, 1998-2000, 2009). He also spent three seasons in Houston from 2004-06.

The legacy is a complicated one for Pettitte though. He admitted in 2007 to using human growth hormone during the 2002 season to recover from an arm injury. His friendship with former Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, who was also accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by trainer Brian McNamee, has led to legal entanglements for years. He’s testified against Clemens multiple times and may still yet have to do it again.

He currently has a record of 255-152 with a career ERA of 3.86. He never won a Cy Young, but finished in the Top 6 in voting five times, including a second place finish in 1996. He went 21-8 with a 3.87 ERA.

Pettitte has never had a losing season in his 18-year career, but is just 10-10 in 28 starts in 2013. He took a loss in his last start on Sept. 17 despite allowing just one run in 6 2/3 innings. He’s likely to get two more starts in 2013 — Sunday against the Giants and Sept. 28 at Houston.

His final home start would be Sunday, when the Yankees are also scheduled to honor Rivera, who also won five titles in the same seasons as Pettitte, and will retire after 19 seasons.

“One of the things I struggled with in making this announcement now was doing anything to take away from Mariano’s day on Sunday,” Pettitte said. “It is his day. He means so much to me, and has meant so much to my career that I would just hate to somehow take the attention away from him.”
