Red Sox fall to Rockies in the Mile High City

It’s starting to become clear Red Sox starter John Lackey is a different pitcher at home than on the road. Following Tuesday night’s game, Lackey is 6-3 with a 2.47 ERA at home, but 4-10 with a 4.68 ERA on the road. He allowed four runs over six innings the Red Sox’ 8-3 loss to the Rockies in Colorado.

In all, Lackey went six innings allowing the four runs on six hits while striking out five. The right-hander allowed three home runs, but luckily for him they were all of the solo variety, which goes along with what has happened all season as of the 26 homers he’s allowed, 22 have been solo shots.

Drake Britton relieved Lackey and allowed a run without recording an out. Things didn’t get much better for Brandon Workman as he allowed three runs in 1/3 inning of work as the Rockies blew the game open by scoring four times in the seventh inning. Franklin Morales and Rubby De La Rosa combined to throw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game.

Offensively the Red Sox couldn’t get much going as they finished with just seven hits. They scored their first run in the seventh inning when Will Middlebrooks scored on a throwing error and got their final two runs in the ninth on a two-run homer off the bat of Jarrod Saltalamacchia. No one on the Sox lineup had a multi-hit game.

The teams will wrap up their brief two game set Wednesday night (8:10, NESN) where Jake Peavy will be opposed by Jhoulys Chacin.

What they’ll be saying: Lackey’s performance makes it even more clear as to why he should the Sox’ No. 2 starter in the playoffs so he can pitch at Fenway, rather than on the road for Game 3. He will now pitch next Sunday in Baltimore for his final tune up before the postseason and Farrell can officially decide on his rotation and where Lackey will fall … Dustin Pedroia went 1-for-4 as he continues to dominate interleague play. He leads all active players in batting average in interleague games hitting .339 going into Wednesday.
