Phillies add rotation depth with Gaudin

Cole Hamels lead the National League (and tied for it in majors) in losses with 13.
Cole Hamels will be the ace of the staff in 2014, but new addition Chad Gaudin could crack the starting rotation with a good spring training.

There really isn’t much drama in the Phillies rotation this offseason.

But that could change with the addition of former Giants pitcher Chad Gaudin.

Gaudin, 30, was given a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Tuesday, and the veteran will compete for a roster spot against John Pettibone and others.

The top three spots are thought to be spoken for, with Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Kyle Kendrick firmly in the picture for 2014. Miguel Gonzalez, recent Cuban free agent signing, is thought to be in the wings for the fourth spot, leaving the final spot for either Gaudin or Pettibone.

The right-hander has pitched for ten organizations in 12 seasons and shined last year in a limited role with the Giants. He started 12 games and had a 3.03 ERA in 30 appearances all season.

He is durable and can start, or serve as a long reliever.

Gaudin missed the final six weeks of 2013 with carpal tunnel syndrome and also was arrested last January for allegedly groping a woman.

He pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge in September according to documents. He will be ready to go in March for the Phillies in Clearwater, Fla.
