Phillies officially sign Abreu

Bobby Abreu
Former Phillie Bobby Abreu will be back in red pinstripes this spring.

The Phillies are not doing a very job fighting off old age. After the team announced it had signed 40-year-old outfielder Bobby Abreu to a one-year minor league contract, it seems as though they are actually working pretty hard to get as old as they possibly can.

With a core of starters huddled in their mid-30s, including Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee and others, it would make sense for the squad to infuse some youth and potential into its aging lineup.

But Reuben Amaro seems content to add experience, as well as declining skills. He already added 36-year-old Marlon Byrd to play a corner outfield position. And now, another former Phillies early 2000′s staple will potentially also be in the outfield in Abreu.

The lefty could earn up to $800,000 if he makes the squad out of spring training.

Abreu did post great numbers recently in his native Venezuela, hitting .322 and a .416 OBP in 50 games with Leones del Caracas.

The once speedy All-Star has had stints with the Yankees and Dodgers following a great career as a Phillie.
