Perhaps moreso than the likes of Magic Johnson years ago and Peyton Manning today, Derek Jeter has earned the respect of most Boston sports fans despite wearing arch-rival colors for years.

Things started out a bit rocky, of course. Chants of “Nomar’s Better!” routinely filled Fenway Park when the Yankees came to Boston in the late 1990s and early 2000s and Jeter was the face of New York baseball dominance over the Sox, from basically his rookie year in 1995 through October of 2004.

Nearly 20 years after his MLB debut, the Yankees iconic shortstop announced Wednesday that the 2014 season will be his last.

“I will remember it all: the cheers, the boos, every win, every loss, all the plane trips, the bus rides, the clubhouses, the walks through the tunnel and every drive to and from the Bronx,” Jeter wrote on Facebook Wednesday. “I have achieved almost every personal and professional goal I have set. I have gotten the very most out of my life playing baseball, and I have absolutely no regrets.”

It is likely that the Red Sox will honor No. 2 this season in the same fashion that they honored former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera multiple times during the 2013 season. Jeter and the Yankees will be at Fenway Park April 22-24, Aug. 1-3 and Sept. 26-28 this season.
