Lackluster Phillies are two-hit

The same sentiment keeps echoing in Clearwater, “it’s only spring training.”

And maybe that is true. There are still over a dozen tune-ups remaining before the Phillies open the regular season in Texas on March 31.

But the offense is healthy. All of it. Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Dominic Brown and Ben Revere are all back at full strength.

So why aren’t they hitting?

The team’s batting average fell even further below .200 Tuesday as the tea, fell to the Braves 9-1 for the second straight day. They lost 8-1 Monday.

The first 15 batters were retired in order, while the Braved tallied 12 hits.

The two hits came from Kevin Frandsen and Reid Brignac. Tony Gwynn Jr. would score on the Frandsen hit, the Phillies lone run.

A bright spot on the mound was David Buchanan, who gave up just one hit in three innings of work.

Phillies’ Stutes clears waivers

At one time, Michael Stutes was a key member of the Phillies young and energetic bullpen.

But recent struggles have turned the righty from a reliable late innings arm for the big league club to a member of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

The 27-year-old gave up seven runs in three innings this spring, and was unable to get his fastball above the 90 mph mark. He battled shoulder injuries throughout the last few seasons.

With Stutes being demoted and clearing waivers, the Phillies now have an open spot on the 40-man roster.
